Incorporating dream material relativizes the expertise of both the clinician and the client.

Much has changed in the field of psychotherapy since its emergence at the turn of the twentieth century. Where the expertise of the clinician originally went unquestioned, the reverse is typically true of contemporary practice: the client is assumed to be the expert and the clinician exists to affirm the client’s expertise. Yet clients typically seek psychotherapy when they have a sense that something in their life needs changing but they don’t know how to move forward. In a sense, their expertise over their own life has hit a roadblock. How can clinicians provide the necessary external guidance without falling into advice-giving, which contaminates the process with their own biases and value systems?

The client is the expert of their own conscious experience, but the dreams themselves are the expert of the unconscious situation, which must be taken into account if the roadblock is to be resolved so that life can move forward again in a new direction.

Hi, I'm Zack Kampf, MSW, LCSW, PhD.

I have been practicing as a clinical social worker for the past six years in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Three years ago, I transitioned into private practice and began working with clients primarily from a Jungian analytical approach, focusing heavily on dream work.

It is no overstatement to say that working with my own dreams and those of my clients has completely transformed my life. At this point I honestly cannot imagine practicing as a clinician without the guidance of dream material.

In 2022 I completed my doctorate in Jungian and Archetypal Studies. I thoroughly enjoy sharing what I’ve learned from that experience with colleagues and fellow seekers of inner wisdom
